How do you test for flammability?
How do you test for flammability?
Updated over a week ago

There are two aspects to flammability testing:

  • Tests are conducted for the flammability of the entire crib.

  • Tests that are conducted for mattress pads and mattresses

We qualify for both these tests.

Flammability of the entire crib: As per the method outlined in 16 CFR 1500.44, the lab conducted the flammability test. The products shall not exceed the maximum allowable limit of 0.1 inches/sec. Cradlewise Smart Crib passes this test. This test is part of the certification for non-full-sized cribs outlined by CPSC.

Flammability of the mattress: We qualify for the Safety Standard for Crib Mattresses as specified by CPSC. To qualify, we need to conduct the flame test for mattresses (16 CFR 1632/16 CFR 1633). We do not use any specific material to qualify for the mattress flammability test. The mattress is tested as is.

Flame resistance does not equate to using flame retardants. We do not use any flame retardants because most of them are carcinogenic. We use naturally flame-resistant materials. Flammability is part of the above certifications, and we have cleared them.

Mattress Construction: We do not use any Polyurethane Foam in the mattress. The reason is that they are known to emit Volatile Organic Compounds. Cradlewise (the entire product, including the mattress) is Green Guard Gold Certified by UL. As part of this certification, it has been tested for over 10,000 chemical emissions and VOCs, undergoing rigorous scientific testing to meet some of the world’s most stringent chemical emissions requirements, contributing to cleaner indoor air and creating a healthier environment. GreenGuard Gold is an annual certification that we renew annually.

Here is a peek into understanding how we designed the mattress:

Cradlewise mattress is made of coconut coir and rubber latex.
